Make your old window or wall air conditioner smarter
In my apartment I have a very old window air conditioner installed through the wall. Unfortunately, the a/c is so old that the thermostat knob goes from 1 to 8, and even when it reaches the set temp the super loud blower fan keeps running nonstop. It doesn’t help that the a/c is in a corner behind the couch just a few inches off the ground. Since my landlord won’t let me upgrade it, I started looking for a way to control the a/c without having to keep turning it on and off all afternoon to save money and keep the noise down.I spent a lot of time researching many different products, and even considered getting a wall thermostat and trying to figure out a way to wire it to control an outlet using a contactor but that seemed like a lot of work. Finally I came across the Meross Smart Temperature Controller, it does everything I was looking for and it even has wifi and works with Google Home and Apple Home! All I had to do to set it up was unplug my window a/c from the wall and plug it into the Meross, and then plug the Meross into the wall. I had to set my a/c to the coldest setting, and now use the Meross to turn it on and off. The box included a good-length wire for the thermometer, which allows me to fix it against the wall away from where the cold air blows.Connecting it to the Meross app was super easy. I’ve struggled with a handful of other brand’s smart devices and getting them connected to the wifi or their respective apps. With the Meross, everything worked right the first time and it went through the steps so quickly that I was actually worried I missed something the first time – I reset everything and started over just to make sure I didn’t miss anything but I hadn’t.The app and smart home connections allow me to control the Meross as if it is a thermostat, which is perfect for me. I can turn it on and off, set the temperature I want, and it even has the ability to set a schedule for the temperature. I like that it allows me to control the “differential” also known as the “deadband”, which is how many degrees it allows the temperature to get from the setpoint before it turns the a/c back on. Since I have my a/c connected to it, the compressor delay is important to me to make sure I don’t damage my landlord’s a/c.While I didn’t expect it before I was setting it up, I was delighted to see that the app shows me how much electricity is being and has been used. It allows you to put in your cost per kilowatt hour and can then show you the cost to operate whatever you have connected. In my case, it shows me just how inefficient and expensive this old a/c unit is to operate in this uninsulated apartment.If you have an old window or wall a/c unit that uses physical knobs to control it and you want something to make it a bit smarter and more efficient, the Meross Smart Temperature Controller is the easiest plug and play option I found on the market!

Full featured temperature controlled socket
I was getting this to controlled a heated mat in a planted aquarium and ended up very surprised at how full featured this device was. I already have a meross garage door controller and several smart plugs so setup was simple using the same app. The device was found under thermostats which took me a while – but that could be because I skipped the instructions.The device seems well made and heavy duty. The cords were all heavy gauge and it had a nice long cord for the temperature reading probe.It was very easy to setup to use to control a heater like I wanted. It has physical controls on the unit itself but much easier to setup in the app. You just set it to heat mode and set the temperature you want. You can even set a differential value (+/-) to anywhere from .5 to 20 degrees.I don’t need a lot of other features but this thing has every feature you can imagine. Of course you can set it to cooling mode that works just like the heat mode. It also has a full schedule for heat and cool so it can have several different set temps in a day and different for each day of the week if you want. It also has a timer mode where it can run something for a certain amount of time and then shut off or cycle on and off in time increments. Another cool feature it has are temp alarms. You can set to sound an alarm if it detects a cold or hot temp so if your heater breaks you will know before it is too late.Like I said it has physical controls but you can also set a child lock so they are disabled. You can calibrate the thermometer if it is off but mine seemed right on. One last cool feature I wasn’t expecting was the energy usage. It shows current usage as well as usage for the day, month, and year with a bar chart.This also works with Alexa and Google Home. I did try it with google home and it shows in google home as a thermostat so about all you can do there is change the set temp so not very full featured there but that may be more a limitation of google home.All in all a very impressive device.
